What is Integrity?
Integrity is a fundamental value in us all, though it is whether or not we implement it in our daily life that makes a difference. Much like trust, it can take years to cultivate one’s integrity, but it takes a simple moment to tarnish it forever. It is what you do when nobody’s watching, expressed in the decisions you make and the values you hold. It means doing what you believe is right in every circumstance, no matter the consequence or persuasion of others. Those with integrity exhibit trustworthiness, values, and follow their moral compass. The quality applies to all aspect of your life: showing up for work early even when the boss isn’t around, admitting that you received too much change at the supermarket, or following through on a promise you made to a friend. Such a state of being can help in our relationships with others. It ties in with honesty, fairness, and reliability. You know the action is the right thing to do, even if it doesn’t affect you. Much like kindness, think of it as a muscle you can build. By implementing such practices day by day with consistency in who you are, you can stretch and grow to improve and build your integrity. It doesn’t have to be for others, but for you. At the end of the day, you can live with yourself and have a clear conscience. At times there are tough choices we must face, but if we face them with integrity, we will have moral soundness and ultimately, improve our unity with our fellow man.
