Do You Really Listen When Your Children Speak?

Children of all ages have much to say.  Many of them have brilliant ideas at young ages. There are children who are old souls in little  bodies, with incredible thoughts about people and life.

Parents are so busy in their lives between work, home, and kids, we often don't take the time to really sit and talk with our children.

Everyday, I send my children to school making sure that we sit and talk at breakfast together, even if only for a few moments.  I always make sure that they know I love them and tell them,  "make today a great day."  I am told, "We know Mama, we will"

At night, we have dinner together talking about our days.  It is so important to engage our kids in conversation.  It can feel like pulling teeth to get any information from them, but it is our job to keep asking.  How was your day?  What did you have for lunch?  Who did you sit with?  What was the best thing that happened to you today?  What was the worst?  What did you do today that was a challenge for you?  Would you like to know about my day?

Another good time to speak to children is bedtime.  My kids love to talk as we are getting ready for bed.  Cuddling while talking is an extremely bonding time.  Whatever time and whatever way works, to connect with your children is the right time.

Engage your children in conversation at a young age and keep it going as they grow.  Let them always feel that they can come to you with anything.  It is our job as parents to make this connection and to keep the doorway of communication open.
