Teaching Tolerance
We live in a diverse world filled with different religions, cultures, and beliefs. While we may not always agree with what our neighbor has to say, or a stranger’s particular viewpoint, we can always express tolerance. We interact with a melting pot of opinions on a daily basis, and our reaction to people’s thoughts is a reflection of who we are.
As children come face to face with a variety of classmates from different backgrounds, we must teach our kids how to be accepting of others. It’s not only the younger generations we have to look out for, however, we must also spread tolerance among our family and friends to live in harmony with one another. Children often mirror the behavior they see in adults, so it is imperative that adults exhibit positive attitudes to past down to their kids.
The world is smaller than we think and we have much more in common with people across the globe than what it seems as first glance.
Being open to others and respecting them are key factors in tolerance. You don’t need to agree with someone, but it is important to respect the fact that they have a right to expressing their beliefs. When it comes down to it, we are all human and all have the same basic wants and needs.
Tolerance is built upon learning from people and appreciating our differences. Rejecting stereotypes and looking past clichés and standards can help in this process. We must know that disrespecting our peers based on social norms is not right and that there is always common ground that can be found.
Your character plays a huge role in exhibiting this quality. Just remember the golden rule: treat others the way you would want to be treated. We must be the change we want to see.
